The basics

What is Amara?

Amara is a safety check-in app that helps you stay accountable to the people you trust. You set check-in times, and if you don't check in as expected, Amara can alert your designated contacts according to your escalation settings.

Who is Amara for?

Amara is for anyone who wants an extra layer of safety and accountability, especially people who live alone, travel alone, have busy schedules, live away from family, or simply want trusted people to know when something may be wrong.

Is Amara a tracking app?

No. Amara is not designed for constant location tracking. Your location can be shared with your trusted contacts when an emergency escalation occurs, according to your settings.

Does Amara replace emergency services?

No. Amara is an additional safety layer, not a replacement for emergency services. It helps notify people you trust when you may need assistance.

Check-ins

What is a check-in?

A check-in is your way of confirming to Amara that you're okay. You choose when you want to check in, and Amara reminds you when that time arrives.

Can I choose my check-in times?

Yes. You can set the specific times when you want Amara to remind you to check in.

What happens if I miss a check-in?

If you don't respond to your check-in within the required timeframe, Amara begins the configured escalation process. Depending on your setup, this can include reminders, alarms, and notifications to your trusted contacts.

Can I cancel an alert after missing a check-in?

Yes. You can cancel an active alert using your security code. The exact response depends on where you are in the escalation process.

Modes

What are Amara's modes?

Amara currently has three modes: Off, Standard, and Interval.

What is Off mode?

Off mode disables your active check-in routine. When you're not using Amara's check-in system, you can switch it off.

What is Standard mode?

Standard mode is the regular Amara check-in experience. You set your check-in times and confirm that you're okay when prompted.

What is Interval mode?

Interval mode allows you to use check-ins based on intervals rather than only fixed check-in times. It's useful when you want regular check-ins during a particular period.

Emergency contacts

Who is an emergency contact?

An emergency contact is someone you trust to be notified if your check-in escalates into an alert.

How many emergency contacts can I have?

You can add trusted people as your emergency contacts according to the limits available in your current Amara plan.

What happens when my emergency contact is notified?

They receive an alert containing the information Amara makes available for that emergency, which can include your emergency instructions, health profile, and location where applicable.

Can my emergency contacts see my location all the time?

No. Amara does not share your location with your contacts continuously. Location information is shared with them in connection with an emergency, according to the information you've provided and your settings.

What kind of instructions can I leave in my Emergency Instructions?

You can leave any information you think could help your trusted contacts know what to do if an emergency occurs. For example, you can include where your house keys are kept, who you're going out with, where you're going, who they should contact, how they can reach you, or anything else that may be useful in an emergency.

Your instructions can be specific to you and your situation. The goal is to give your trusted contacts the information they may need to respond quickly when it matters.

Security codes

What is my check-in security code?

Your check-in code is the code you use to confirm that you're okay when completing a check-in.

What is a duress code?

Your duress code (also referred to as a panic code) is a separate security code designed for situations where you need help but may not be able to openly indicate that something is wrong.

What happens when I use my duress code?

Amara presents the check-in or cancellation flow as though everything is normal while discreetly triggering the appropriate alert to your designated contacts.

Will my emergency contact know that I used the duress code?

They receive the appropriate emergency notification, but the app does not openly indicate on your screen that you've triggered a duress alert.

Can I use my normal check-in code as my duress code?

No. Your check-in and duress codes should be separate. This allows the duress feature to work discreetly.

Instructions, health, and location

What are emergency instructions?

Emergency instructions are information you provide to help your trusted contacts understand what to do if an alert is triggered.

What is the health profile?

Your health profile contains health-related information that you choose to share with your trusted contacts for emergency situations.

When can my contacts see my health profile?

Your health profile is intended to be available to your designated contacts when an emergency occurs, rather than as information they can access at any time.

Can I share my location with my contacts?

Yes. Amara can share your location with your designated contacts when an emergency occurs.

Sleep window

What is a sleep window?

A sleep window lets you tell Amara when you're sleeping so your normal check-in routine can account for that period.

Why do I need a sleep window?

A sleep window helps prevent your normal check-in routine from treating your sleeping hours like a missed check-in.

Privacy

Does Amara constantly monitor me?

No. Amara is designed around check-ins and emergency escalation, not constant monitoring.

Who can access my information?

Your information is used to provide Amara's safety features and shared with your designated contacts only where the relevant feature or emergency calls for it.

Can my emergency contacts see my health information whenever they want?

No. The health information you provide is intended to be available to your trusted contacts in connection with an emergency.

Does Amara know where I am all the time?

No. Amara is not designed as a continuous location-tracking service.
